I actually used to come into this building when it was a post office when I was quite young . I'm from Echo Park , born and raised in Los Angeles . I , you know , I'm proud of it .

The station opened in May 3 of 1939 . The 1940 census of Los Angeles said we had just about a million people on May 3 through five of 1939 over 500,000 people showed up for the opening of the station . That is how dramatically important this station was and continues to be unto today .
